Frutez magnus, ramulis glabris, ad nodes compressis ; partes novelise pilis stel-
latis subfurfara(cege. Folia 3-6 poll, longa, f-2£ lata, petiole -|~f -pollicari. Cyma
foliis breviores, 1-3-pollicares, plan- vel pauciflori. Drupes in sicco acutaj, £-polli-
cares, pedicello brevi suffultae,

Dr. vVight distinguished three species by the inflorescence and shape of the leaves;
but these chstracters appear too variable to be relied on, several specimens now before
us being quite intermediate in shape of leaf. The number of flowers is certainly not
at all to be depended upon..

VIII. MENISPERMACE^].

Flores abortu. unisexuales, plerumque dioici. Sepala 4-12, plerum-
que 6 biserialia, rarius 4, rarissime 5 uniserialia, interdum multi-
serialia, discreta vel rarissime gamosepala, sest. «imbricata, rarissime
valvata. Petala 6, serie duplici imbricata, rarius 4 vel nulla, inter-
dum basi garaopetala (rarissime 5). Stamina petala numero sequantia
et iis opposita, vel plura (9-18) rarissimo 3 ; jilainenta libera, vel in
columnam centralem cylindricam aut globosam coalita (in Odontocarya
biserialia, petal or um numero dupla) ; anthera valde variae, ad apicem
filament! adnatse et tune extrorse vel lateraliter vel introrse imo trans-
verse dehiscentes, seu circa discum peltatum horizontaliter dispositae,
selu supra globum irregulariter sitae ; in floribus ftamineis effcetae vel
nullse. Ovctiria plerumque 3 (petalis exterioribus opposita), rarius so-
litaria, interilum 6 vel plura, toro inserta vel 'gynophoro brevi suffiilta,
uhiovulata. Ovula amphitropa, suturai ventrali peltatim affixa, raris-
sime anatropa, tegumento unico, micropyla superiore, chalaza basin
ovarii spectante. Styli terminales, subulati vel depress!, inlerdum 3-5-
lobi. Carpella drupacea, styli cicatrice terniinali vel saepius basilari
notata i putamen. lignosum vel fere osseum, obscure bivalve, per ovarii
maturationem in unaquaque fere ' specie mo do diverso deformatum.
Semina putaminis cavitati plerumque valde irregulaii conformia, hippo-
crepice curvata, vel uncinata vel circa processum mternum putaminis
conchaeformia, rarissime recta. Testa tuiiiiissiine membranacea. 4lbu~
mm copiosum vel parcum, oleosum, sequabile vel membranaj nuclearoe
laminis tenuibus trans versis ruminatuma interdum nullum. Embyo in
speciebus exalbuminosis crassus carnosus cotyledonibus araygdalinis, in.
albuminosis ceutralis vel panim excentricus ; rudicida semper superior
et ad styli cicatricem spectans, set I in seminibus hijjpocrcpicis fere basi-
laris, cylindrica* Cotyledons valde variae, ssepe foliaceoc divaricatse et
in loculis sepanttis albuminis inclusa?, pleruinque normal) ter appositas,
lineari-obloiigee vei semicylindricse, radiculam diametro non superantes,
in exalbuminosis crassae aniygdalinae. — Prutices scandentes vel sarmen-
tosi, foliis etcstipulatis alternis plerumque palmintrviis et sape peltatis,
petiolis basi (et interdum eiiam apice) pseudo-articulatix et wepiits basi vel
utrinque incrassatis. Flores iuconspicui, plerumque mlnwti, paniculati,
racemosi vel Vi/Mosi, rarissimv in assillis solitarii.

As now correctly limited by the exclusion of Jjardixet&ttiaceai and of a number of
genera which \vere only referred hither because their structure was quite unknown,
